Explore Zhemgang - The ecotourism capital

Zhemgang, centrally located in Bhutan, stands out as the nation’s eco-tourism capital, celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity and cultural richness. The Dzongkhag is a sanctuary for rare wildlife, including the Golden Langur and the Royal Bengal Tiger, and includes significant protected areas like the Royal Manas National Park, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park and Phrumsengla National Park connected by Biological Corridor Number 4 (BC4). Its landscapes range from dense forests to river valleys and high mountains, offering a picturesque setting for eco-friendly activities such as bird watching, trekking, and wildlife observation. Traditional villages and ancient temples within Zhemgang provide deep cultural experiences, showcasing Bhutan’s heritage through unique architecture, festivals, and handicrafts.
Community-based tourism initiatives are at the heart of Zhemgang’s eco-tourism model, ensuring that local communities benefit directly from tourism activities. This approach not only promotes sustainable tourism but also aids in preserving the Dzongkhag’s natural and cultural resources. Enhanced accessibility through improved infrastructure has made this remote region more reachable, while sustainable developments such as eco-lodges and nature trails support the eco-tourism framework.
The Bhutanese government’s strong commitment to environmental conservation, coupled with support from GEF tourism, further promotes Zhemgang’s status as an eco-tourism hub. This synergistic effort between the government and local communities creates a sustainable tourism environment, making Zhemgang a premier destination for those seeking an authentic and environmentally conscious travel experience.
